Winter pressures - demand for appointments

As you will no doubt have seen in the media, nationally, demand for appointments in GP surgeries is at exceptionally high levels. Despite our team continuing to work to the best of their ability, we are all feeling the strain and we know that, despite our very best efforts, patients are frustrated that they cannot get appointments as quickly as they would like.  Health services across the country are under enormous and unprecedented strain.

We are disappointed that in the last month 219 patients failed to attend their appointment. This amounts to almost 55 hours of a clinical time that was wasted. If those patients had cancelled, we could have seen other patients earlier. There is no excuse for not cancelling an appointment you are unable to attend. You can do this using our automated service (24 hours/day, 365 days/year) simply by telephoning 01642 424622 or by using the NHS app, Airmid or Systmonline. Patients who persistently fail to attend their appointments will be de-registered.

We know that the majority of our patients want to help themselves and help/support us too. Here's how you can all help:

Try self-help before contacting us. There are a number of resources on the internet. Here are some examples:

  • Many illnesses will get better on their own and don't require treatment from us. https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/antibiotics/
  • This is an excellent resource for parents: https://newcastlegatesheadccg.nhs.uk/wp-content/uploads/sites/12/2020/08/Little-Orange-Book.pdf
  • Seek help from you pharmacist (many common ailments can be treated with pharmacist advice/over the counter medicines)
  • If you suspect you have Covid, please stay at home and follow the self-care advice in this link: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/self-care-and-treatments-for-coronavirus/how-to-treat-symptoms-at-home/   You should only contact us if you are unable to self-care and have concerns about how to manage your condition. To avoid infecting others, please contact us by telephone.
  • Unless it's urgent - If you do need to contact us to book, change/cancel an appointment or order a repeat prescription, please use the automated service (01642 424622). The first time you use the service you will need to contact us for a PIN number.
  • Make sure you are signed up to use online services. Unless you already have a Systmonline or Airmid account, the easiest method is to download the NHS app.
  • Please cancel any appointment you are unable to attend.
  • Whenever possible, before requesting an urgent appointment, please ensure you have tried all the above self-help methods first.

If the majority of patients follow this advice, we will be available to see those patients who most need our help.

We strongly urge patients with severe or ongoing health problems not to delay contacting us.

Prospective Access To GP Records

As data controller we take your personal data seriously. Due to technical issues and legality as data controller of our patient information, we will not grant Pt access until fully safe and secure to do so.

Whilst we wish to support the principle of patient access, we are currently providing access in a manner that we determine and is within our resources and which is under the control of our organisation.

We will respond to individual patient requests and make organisational changes at a pace where we can be sure patient care and access can be managed safely.

Telephone number to make appointments and order repeat prescriptions

We are delighted to announce an upgrade to our telephone system. We have added an automated service called Voice Connect (previously known as Patient Partner), which allows you to book, change or cancel an appointment or order a repeat prescription 24 hours/day, every day of the year.
As it is an automated system, there are no call queues! This has the added benefit of freeing up our staff to deal with the patients that need to speak to us.
To use this service, simply telephone 01642 42 46 22
Initially, to use the service, you may need to telephone us first - to obtain a PIN code, but as soon as you are set up, you can use the new system.
