Test Results

Why do I need a test?

When diagnosing or treating medical conditions quite often tests or investigations are required. These could be in the form of samples being taken such as blood, urine or faeces. It may be through imaging or taking readings such as an x-ray or ECG.

All test requests should be managed and requested by either a GP or a hospital, this is to make sure you receive the most appropriate investigation into your medical condition.

When do my tests need to be done?

Your GP or hospital will advise you of the time frame in which you should have your tests done.

When we do tests or take samples at the surgery these need to be done, or received from the patient before 11.30am or 3.30pm. At these times a courier comes to the surgery to collect samples to be taken to the lab at BSUH for processing.

When can I get my results?

The time it takes for the doctor to receive and review your test results depends on the type of test you have had and what the samples are being tested for. It is a good idea to ask the clinician who is taking your sample or preforming your test, when you should contact the surgery for your results.

You can telephone main reception after 3pm for all test results.

Please note, if your tests have been requested by a hospital, your results may not come back to your GP but instead return to the hospital department that requested them.
