Practice Prescribing Policy of Benzodiazepines

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PATIENTS WISHING TO REGISTER WITH THE PRACTICE

This surgery does not issue repeat (ongoing) prescriptions for any of the following medications;

  • Sleeping tablets (e.g. Temazepam, Nitrazepam, Zopiclone, Zolpidem)
  • Benzodiazepines (e.g. Diazepam, Clonazepam, Lorazepam, Chlordiazepoxide)
  • Pregabalin and Gabapentin for pain
  • Long term opioid pain relief (Tramadol, Co-codamol, Codeine, Dihydrocodeine, Tapentadol, Buprenorphine, Fentanyl, Oxycodone or Morphine)
  • Lidocaine patches for reasons other than post-herpetic neuralgia
  • Quinine
  • Any medication that can be bought over the counter in a pharmacy or supermarket

Patients who are taking this type of medication and wish to register with us will be given a gradual reduction programme by the Practice Pharmacist.

Agreement with this policy is a strict requirement for registration with the practice.

Patients taking these medications regularly will be invited to a medication review with the Practice Pharmacist where a reduction programme will be agreed. Patients will be provided with support to stop taking these medications.

If you are not taking a Northern Ireland formulary approved medication, your medication regime may be changed to reduce costs on the NHS.

This policy follows national guidance to ensure the safe and cost effective use of medications.
