Advanced Nurse Practitioners 

Nurse Practitioners manage their own caseloads, sharing patients care with medical colleagues working in the same area of practice. A nurse practitioner may work with the patient to determine a plan of care and can deliver a large portion of that care themselves. 

ANP's can: 

  • Assess, examine and make a diagnosis
  • Give advice about the management of self limiting and other illness
  • Refer patients
  • Prescribe medications for patient if required

Practice Nurses

Practice Nurses assist in clinical car of patients and work within their own scope of knowledge and skills to provide a lead role in the implementation of good clinical management of patients within a specific diagnosed chronic disease e.g. asthma, COPD, diabetes, hypertension and heart disease.

Responsibilities include: 

  • Carrying out physical examinations, investigatory procedures and cervical smears
  • Providing advice about contraception
  • Treating wounds e.g. leg ulcers
  • Applying and removing dressings
  • Giving advice, education and information about health conditions and ailments, stopping smoking and losing weight
  • Administering immunisations, vaccinations (e.g. influenza) and infant injections
  • Running clinics for diabetes and asthma

Assistant Practitioners 

Assistant Practitioners are able to deliver elements of health and social care and undertake clinical work in the areas that have previously only been in the remit of registered professionals. Assistant Practitioners undertake a 2 year foundation degree as part of their training. 

Responsibilities include: 

  • New patient checks
  • Annual checks
  • NHS health checks
  • Stock control
  • Learning disability health checks
  • Treating small injuries
  • Assisting in minor operations
  • Assisting in women's health clinics
  • Assisting in leg ulcer clinics
  • Coordinating vaccination programmes
  • Infection control

Healthcare Assistants assist the registered Practice Nurses and Doctors in the delivery of direct and indirect patient care, ensuring that patient safety and well-being is respected at all times. 

Responsibilities / Duties include: 

  • Phlebotomy (blood tests)
  • New patient checks
  • Blood pressure checks
