Family Planning

IUD

Dr Geeta Wadhwa is a GP with a special interest in Gynaecology and performs contraceptive implants and coil (IUD) fitting at the surgery.

Sex is a normal aspect of adult life. It is very important that you know about sexual health and take seriously the responsibility of protecting yourself from unwanted diseases or pregnancies - we can advise on all aspects of sexual health and provide a full range of contraceptive methods including emergency contraception (the 'morning-after pill').

All the doctors and nurses do repeat prescriptions of the pill for those needing further supplies.

Post-Coital 'morning after' Pill or coil (IUD)

T here are now two types of morning after (post-coital pill) available.  The earlier the morning after pill is taken, the more effective it is.  One pill has to be given within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse and the other within 120 hours.

• Within first 24 hours..........95% effective
• Within 48 hours.................85% effective
• Within 72 hours.................58% effective

Emergency contraception pills can be prescribed by all the doctors or nurses as well as local certified pharmacists and the  Family Planning Clinic  who have regular clinics in the Forum.

If you have left it more than 72 hours, you can still have a coil (IUD) fitted up to five days after unprotected sexual intercourse. Make an appointment with Dr Wadhwa or the local  Family Planning Clinic , as soon as possible, to make arrangements.

It is important to see a health professional (doctor or nurse) for family planning advice as soon as possible after taking emergency contraception to arrange a method of regular contraception.

NB - IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A PERIOD WITHIN TWO TO THREE WEEKS AFTER TAKING EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTION YOU MUST SEE A HEALTH PROFESSIONAL (DOCTOR OR NURSE) AS YOU MAY BE PREGNANT.

All the doctors are sympathetic to women who wish to discuss unwanted pregnancies. A Central Booking Service has been organised by the Manchester PCT which can be contacted directly by patients from 8 am to 9 pm Monday to Friday:
