Training Practice

Our surgery has been involved in training new General Practitioners since 1980. Training practices are rigorously scrutinized by the NHS Education Scotland and have to reach the highest standards of care.

GP registrars are appointed only after a minimum of three years Postgraduate training in hospital. Each Registrar usually spends one year in the training practice. Please welcome them and treat them as you would any of the other doctors. Dr Cunningham, Dr McHugh, Dr McNab, Dr Miller and Dr Bothwell all did their training in general practice at Frew Terrace Surgery.

We are also involved in the training of junior doctors who spend four months in the practice.
As part of the training program some consultations are video recorded.  These recording are held on encrypted data/media sticks and the only people who have access to these are the trainee and trainer.  The trainer will review the videos with his/her trainee and give feedback.  This will help the trainee to improve their consultation skills if necessary.   

Patients are asked to sign a consent form, however, you do not have to agree to this.  If you do not wish your consultation to be recorded you just have to let the receptionist know.

The doctors work closely with other members of the Community Health Care team. These colleagues are employed by the Primary Care Trust.

Health Visitors

The surgery has a team of Health Visitors led by Lorraine McQuaker  They are based at Bourtreehill Medical Practice along side the District Nursing Team. They have specific responsibility for health promotion and the care and developmental assessment of children. District Nurses

Our District Nurses provide a wide range of nursing services for people in their own homes. If you require to speak to the District Nurses. They are based at Bourtreehill Health Centre and the contact telephone number is 01294 322244.

Community Midwives

Our Midwife is Ruth Irvine.  Ruth shares the care of pregnant women with the doctors and maternity hospital. The Midwives’ contact telephone number: 01294 323061.

we have 2 practice nurses - Theresa Monaghan and Dianne Quinn.  We also have Health Board employed CTAC nurses - Lisa Gilmour and Dawn Davis.

All of the nurses are experienced practice nurses and have extensive duties, looking after people who have conditions such as asthma,  diabetes  and high blood pressure. They also see patients for ear syringing and contraceptive advice. They also assist the doctors at minor surgery and well-woman clinics. The clinical team can be contacted on 01294 272326.

Our healthcare support workers are employees of the Health Board's CTAC service.  Sarah works Monday to Wednesday and Gail works Tuesday and Thursday.

Our practice manager and her assistant manage a team of receptionists, computer operators and medical secretaries.

A great deal of resource has been invested in the training and development of our staff. We are proud of the fact that we have a low turnover of staff in our Practice. The staff have a very difficult job to do. They have to make sure that the doctors and nurses who look after you have all the correct information. They have been instructed to ask for information from patients. Any information that is given to any of our practice staff is treated in the strictest of confidence.
