Covid-19 Vaccinations in Nottinghamshire: Letters being sent to over 80s, look out for yours

Across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire people over the age of 70 are being contacted to book their Covid-19 vaccination.

In the next few weeks, over 70s will receive a letter from the NHS explaining how to book their appointment.

Health bosses have asked the public to wait until they have received their letter before contacting the NHS, their GP or local hospital hub – the letter will have full details of how to make an appointment.  Do not call your GP or turn up at A&E or your doctor’s surgery – the only way to get an appointment and the jab is to follow the instructions in the letter.

Amanda Sullivan, Accountable Officer at Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “This is the biggest vaccination programme the NHS has ever undertaken. It is a huge challenge and one that has been rolled out at great pace. Our teams are working really hard but it’s important to remember this is only the first stage of the programme so we are learning and improving as we go.

“We understand many people are keen to see their family get the vaccine as soon as possible to protect them from getting seriously ill. Details of how people over the age of 80 make their vaccine appointment have been shared and used amongst other, less vulnerable groups. If you see a message directed at an 70 year old, or someone who is most at risk asking them to book to receive a vaccine, please don’t log on or pick up the phone unless you are calling on their behalf. We need to protect the appointments for those most in need. 

“In time, everyone will be vaccinated so for now we are urging the public to work with us and be patient so we can first vaccinate those who need it most.”

The roll out of Covid-19 vaccines to people most in need began at the two hospital hubs, Queens Medical Centre and Kings Mill Hospital, in early December.

Teams across the health and care system in Nottinghamshire are now preparing for a further roll out of the vaccine into the community for those over 80 years old. During January Local Vaccination Services at GP surgeries and other community sites will start to open across Nottinghamshire.

Dr John Brewin, Chief Executive of Nottinghamshire Healthcare said: “The NHS is experienced in delivering millions of vaccines a year, and is moving quickly to roll out this vaccine to those who need it, it’s important that we remember this will be a marathon, not a sprint.

“The recent rise in cases and emergence of a new variant of the virus also shows that we cannot let our guard down now. NHS staff are doing an incredible job to deliver what it is the largest vaccination programme in our history, at the same time as continuing to be there for everyone who needs care.”

The public have an important part to play to help:
• please don’t contact the NHS to seek a vaccine, we will contact you;
• when we do contact you, please attend your booked appointments;
• and please continue to follow all the guidance to control the virus and save lives.

There is obviously a lot of interest in the new coronavirus vaccination programme that is being rolled out across the UK nationally from 8th December. The Government have agreed that priority groups such as care home workers and patients over 70 years will be the first to be vaccinated and if you are in one of these two groups you will be contacted by letter shortly.

Other groups will be vaccinated later depending on the availability of the vaccines. Please note:

- When it is the right time people will receive an invitation to have the vaccine

- For most people the invitation will be by letter

- This letter will include all the information you will need to book your appointment including your NHS number

- Please DO NOT contact the surgery or the NHS for your appointment until you receive your letter of invitation

SEASONAL FLU:

We are now offering the 50-64 year olds seasonal flu vaccination appointments. Please contact reception for an appointment.

Flu can cause severe illness and even death among vulnerable groups, as well as complications like bronchitis and pneumonia, so it is particularly important to have the flu vaccine. The vaccine is available free of charge on the NHS, if you:

  •      Are 50 years or over
  •      Are pregnant
  •      Have certain medical conditions
  •      Are living in a long-stay residential care home or other long-stay facility
  •      Receive a carer’s allowance, or you are the main carer for an elderly or disabled person whose welfare may be at risk if you fall ill
  •      Live with someone who’s at risk of coronavirus (on the NHS shielded patient list) or you expect to be with them on most days over winter

SEASONAL FLU VACCINATION CLINICS 2020

Due to the current COVID19 situation our flu clinics will be organised differently this year.

Please take note of the following points:

  • Flu clinics will be appointment only – there will be no ‘drop-ins’
  • There will be a one-way route through the Practice with social distancing
  • We ask that you wear suitable clothing and have your upper arm exposed as you enter the consulting room
  • The appointment will be for the seasonal flu vaccination only – please do not ask reception or the doctor/nurse for prescriptions or any additional service or information.

Coronavirus (COVID-19): what you need to do

 Stay Alert - Control The Virus - Save Lives

As part of safe-guarding patients and staff, from Monday 15th July patients will only be permitted to enter the practice building if they are wearing a face mask. Although not a substitute for social distancing the use of face masks by both patients and staff will help to protect and manage the risk of further spread of the virus. The NHS is not able to provide masks for patients who are expected to obtain them themselves before coming to the building. Further guidance on staying safe outside your home and in the workplace can be found on the gov.uk website.

Advice for people with severe health conditions

NHS services are contacting people with a range of severe health conditions urging them to self-isolate for 12 weeks. We have also contacted all local patients with a generic message following the prime ministers advice. Please don’t panic if you have received the text and don’t have a severe health condition. Health advice will be confirmed by letter to those identified this week. There is no need to contact your GP about the message.

As part of the Practice's response to the threat of Covid-19 we are temporarily suspending the ability of patients to make face to face appointments. This is so all patients can be screened to make sure they are not at risk of having the virus before they come to the practice.

If you telephone for an appointment you will be asked whether you have potential coronavirus symptoms. If necessary a GP may ring you to give advice. 

The facility to order prescriptions online has not been affected.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and hope you understand we are making these changes for both staff and patient's safety. You will also appreciate the situation is changing rapidly and we will continue to respond to the situation as it develops.

Coronavirus: (Covid-19) - The following information is up to date as of 28th August 2020

The NHS in England and Public Health England (PHE) are extremely well prepared for outbreaks of new infectious diseases. The NHS has put in place measures to ensure the safety of all patients and NHS staff.

If you or anyone you live with have symptoms such as a high temperature (greater that 37.8C) or a new continuous cough, you should ring 119 to arrange a test for Covid-19. You should stay at home for 14 days or until you hear that your test is negative.

Do not go to a GP surgery, community pharmacy or hospital. Stay indoors and avoid close contact with other people. If symptoms persist or worsen use the on-line 111 coronavirus service at 111.nhs.uk

Like the common cold, coronavirus infection usually occurs through close contact with a person with novel coronavirus via cough and sneezes or hand contact. A person can also be infected by touching contaminated surfaces if they do not wash their hands.

Testing of suspected coronavirus cases is carried out in line with strict regulations. This means that suspected cases are kept in isolation, away from public areas of the hospital and returned home also in isolation. Any equipment that come into contact with suspected cases are thoroughly cleaned as appropriate. Specific guidance has also been shared with NHS staff to help safeguard them and others. Patients can be reassured that their safety is a top priority, and are encouraged to attend all appointments as usual.

Everyone is being reminded to follow Public Health England advice to:

  • Always carry tissues with you and use them to catch your cough or sneeze. Then bin the tissue, and wash your hands, or use a sanitiser gel.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after using public transport. Use a sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are unwell.

Patient Participation Group

We are an active group of patients who meet bi-monthly with a range of staff from the practice and provide a link between staff and patients. We also take soundings from a wider ‘virtual’ group of practice patients who contribute their views and opinions on important topics by email.

We aim to:

    • Provide a forum for patients where they will have the opportunity to collaborate with and support the practice, and provide a patient’s perspective to the practice, both in meetings and via electronic communication (‘virtual PPG group’).

    • Enable patients to influence local health care services.

    • Communicate with all patients coming to the practice via the noticeboard to the left of the reception desk which display our latest ideas for you to read and comment on. Also look out for news items in the practice newsletter, both in print and on the website, and text messages and emails for important updates.

    • Support the practice with patient education and gathering feedback e.g. through the ‘Friends and Family Test’ survey each month.

    • Hold an Annual General Meeting to review our progress and invite any patient to attend to express their views.

    • Engage patients and help develop an understanding of the impact of important changes to healthcare being introduced across the whole Rushcliffe area.

    • Represent the view of Musters medical Practice patients at NHS Rushcliffe CCG patient forums on which we are active participants.
