The Welsh Centre for Burns and Plastic Surgery is the only burn service in Wales and treats patients from South and Mid-Wales*, as well as the most severely injured adult patients across the network. Severely injured paediatric patients are referred to the Children’s Burns Centre in Bristol. The Centre provides high quality centre-level care for burn injured adult patients and Unit-level burn care to children.

The Centre provides 24/7 consultant-delivered care with a strong emphasis on multi-disciplinary team (MDT) working.

Daily multi-disciplinary ward rounds include surgeons, anaesthetist/intensivists, therapists and nurses. Severely injured patients are cared for in a purpose-built, enclosed unit with full facilities and operating theatres.

Rehabilitation is managed by a specialist team of occupational therapists and physiotherapists with support from a consultant clinical psychologist.

As soon as recovery allows, English patients are repatriated to a Specialised Burn Service closer to where they live for ongoing care and rehabilitation.

Multi-disciplinary surgical and scar-management clinics are held at the Centre and at University Hospital of Wales (UHW) Cardiff.

The burn outreach service offers clinics in Brecon, Laughne and Cardiff.

The Centre also treats patients from South and Mid-Wales suffering extensive skin loss from necrotising fasciitis (NF) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN).

Tele-referrals must be made via the MDSAS Burn Tele-referral system and any injury images or additional documents can be uploaded via the SID-Secure Image Data App.  Referrers must also phone the Burn Service once the referral has been submitted.  Please see full instructions and guidance via:

Further information about tele-medicine system can be found on the Tele-referral page.
