What is a Fit Note?

A Fit Note (also known as a Sick Note or Statement of Fitness for Work) is an official document that provides evidence of your illness or health condition for your employer. It explains whether you are not fit for work or may be fit for work with adjustments.

Fit Notes can be issued by:

  • GPs

  • Hospital doctors

  • Some other healthcare professionals involved in your care

They can be provided digitally or on paper.

When do I need a Fit Note?

You do not need a Fit Note for the first 7 calendar days of illness. During this time, you can self‑certify using your employer’s process.

You need a Fit Note only if you are unwell for more than 7 days and require evidence for your employer.
