Department: Ear, Nose and Throat Department

What the attachment offers trainees:

The duration of the trainee’s post in this department is 4 months.

 Ward  Rounds:Daily ward rounds starting at 8.30am, mostly consultant-led.
 Outpatients:













Trainees are observers in a consultant’s clinic during the initial 5 days of their posting. From the following week onwards new patients are allocated to take history and examination by the trainees. They then discuss these cases with either a consultant or a senior middle grade doctor regarding further management of these patients. Trainees are also allowed to run a small clinic under observation of a consultant.

There are two emergency clinics daily, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Under supervision of senior doctors, trainees see and treat emergency referrals such as epistaxis, peritonsillar abscess, acute ear conditions, acute tonsillitis and foreign bodies in the throat, nose and ears.

Trainees are in the outpatient taught about performing flexible laryngoscopy examination, cautery of the nasal septum to stop epistaxis, aspiration of peritonsillar abscess under LA, reduction of nasal fracture under LA and suction clearance of ears using microscope and other procedures such as Epley’s for the treatment of BPPV.
 Theatres:Observes all types of ENT surgical procedures and also receive teaching from the senior doctors. 

What teaching is offered:

  1. Teaching during the daily ward rounds
  2. Tutorials and Journal Clubs on alternate Tuesday afternoon - trainees are asked to discuss various ENT topics and also lectures given by the senior doctors in the tutorials
  3. Combined ENT/Radiology meeting once a month
  4. Encouraged to participate in clinical audits
  5. Teaching in the outpatient
