NHS vaccinations and when to have them - NHS (www.nhs.uk)

First immunisations for babies are discussed as part of their 6-8 week GP check. Your Health Visitor can also provide information about this check and baby immunisations.

Babies are first immunised at 8,12 and 16 weeks of age

MMR vaccinations are generally given between 12 and 15 months of age

Pre-school boosters are given after 3 and a half years of age

All Teenage Immunisations are undertaken at school by the School Nursing Team. If you need further information regarding this, please contact your child’s school who can put you in touch with the School Nurses.

• Contraceptive Services 

Our practice nurses, in conjunction with the doctors provide a full range of contraceptive services in normal surgery and by appointment. Emergency contraception can also be obtained from the Walk-in-Centre.

We also offer appointments for fitting contraceptive implants, coils and giving contraceptive injections.

• Phlebotomy Services 

We have a Phlebotomy Service – i.e. service for taking blood. Appointments are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings.

• Teenage Health

We offer a discrete and confidential service for teenagers to discuss any health issues with either the doctor or practice nurse.

• Minor Operations and Joint Injections

We endeavour to provide high quality care by experienced clinicians in the surgery to reduce the need for unnecessary hospital referrals and procedures which inevitably cost more than they would do in General Practice.

Currently we are offering some minor surgery and joint injections by Dr Samantha Clements and Paula Muir (Advanced Nurse Practitioner)

• Long term condition reviews

You will be invited to make an appointment to review any long term conditions such as diabetes, asthma, COPD or heart disease.

• Women’s Health

Most women need a cervical smear every 3 years. You can make an appointment with one of our practice nurses.

• NHS Health Check 

Health Checks aim to help prevent heart disease, stroke, diabetes, kidney disease and certain types of dementia. Patients between the ages of 40-74, who has not been diagnosed with one of these conditions or have certain risk factors, will be invited (once every five years) to have a check. Please book your appointment with a practice nurse if you feel you require a health check.

• Dietary Advice/weight loss services 

All doctors, nurses and pharmacists can direct you to the services available locally and can make referrals at your request.

• Travel Clinic

If you are planning to travel abroad make an appointment to see one of our practice nurses for vaccinations and advice at least 6 weeks before travelling. More information is available on our travel vaccination page

• Home Blood Pressure Monitoring

We now have a small stock of BP machines available to lend to people who are asking to do home BP monitoring. Please ask at reception if you would like to be added to the waiting list

Travel Vaccinations

If you require any vaccinations relating to foreign travel you need to make an appointment with the practice nurse to discuss your travel arrangements. This will include which countries and areas within countries that you are visiting to determine what vaccinations are required.

It is important to make this initial appointment as early as possible - at least 4 weeks before you travel. You can complete the travel questionnaire attached here and drop it in to the surgery when you make your appointment.

Some vaccines are not available on the nhs and you may have to attend a private clinic for these – these include yellow fever, meningitis ACWY, rabies, Japanese encephalitis, tick born encephalitis, cholera and malaria prophylaxis.

Travelling in Europe

If you are travelling to Europe the EU has published useful information for travellers on the European website.

What is Social Prescribing?

Many things affect your health and wellbeing. GPs tell us that a lot of people visit them feeling isolated or lonely. Or they might be stressed out by work, money and housing problems. Sometimes it’s the stress of managing different long-term conditions.

If one of the practice team feels that you would benefit from social prescribing, they will refer you to a social prescribing link worker. The link worker is there to listen to you, and put you in touch with the people and activities that might help you to feel better.

NHS England have created a social prescribing leaflet to explain what the service is.

Recently had some tests organised through the practice?

You do not need to worry

All blood test results and investigations received by us are reviewed by a member of staff within 1-2 days of them arriving in the practice, and any significant, urgent results are passed to the emergency doctor (usually the same day)

All other results not requiring immediate action are reviewed by the GP who ordered them within a few days.

In all cases the doctor then makes a decision on how important it is for you to be reviewed and how soon this needs to happen.

Doctors will communicate this directly to you, or via the reception staff who will arrange a review by phone or face to face as instructed by the GP.

Most results will return as normal or satisfactory and no action will be required. The surgery will not contact you about normal or satisfactory results.

You had some tests through the surgery, and now need to find out the results

The reception staff can give basic information such as your tests results are ‘normal’ or ‘satisfactory’.

Your result may also be reported as ‘borderline’ meaning the result is just outside the normal values, but has been deemed to be acceptable by the doctor.

Other results may require feedback from a clinician.

If you need to ring for your results it is recommended you avoid the busiest times in the morning.

If you need to discuss your results you need to discuss this with the doctor who ordered the tests and understands the nature of your problem. They will be able to interpret the results taking your personal situation into account.

But I am worried something serious is wrong and this could be missed if I wait to see the original doctor, as they can’t see me for 4 weeks?

The process outlined above prevents this from happening. The results are reviewed and if we need to see you more urgently we will tell you. It is far better for your ongoing care to wait and see the original doctor who requested the tests as they have already started the process of investigation and have formulated a plan of care in their mind and with you.

I feel more unwell and/or my symptoms have changed since my tests were done

If this is the case you should call us and explain to the receptionist that your condition is different or worse and they can arrange for the situation to be reassessed. In many cases it will still be better for the doctor who saw you initially to review you. However our trained staff will advise you on the best course of action. This may involve a call back from the emergency clinician.

Non-NHS Services

Some services provided are not covered under our contract with the NHS and therefore attract charges. Examples include the following:

• Medicals for pre-employment, sports and driving requirements (HGV, PSV etc.)
• Insurance claim forms
• Passport signing
• Prescriptions for taking medication abroad
• Private sick notes
• Vaccination certificates
• Gun Licence

The fees charged are based on the British Medical Association (BMA) suggested scales and our reception staff will be happy to advise you about them along with appointment availability.
