In regards to the new data collection programme announced recently, if you do not want to share anonymised data with NHS Digital you will need to register the Type 1 Opt out form– this will stop any personal data going to NHS Digital.

If you are happy with your data being shared from the practice to NHS Digital (so they can use it for this data collection and analysis) but do not want NHS Digital sharing it further, you need to register with the National Data Opt out.

Patients will need to register before September if they wish to opt out. Contact reception for a form.

NHS Digital have been clear that when they receive the data, the data will be pseudonymised – no patient identifiers will be sent across from your GP clinical system. However, please be aware that they do hold the ‘key’ to un- pseudonymise where they have legitimate use to do so and share to other organisations if relevant (applying the National Data Opt out will stop the data being shared unless for direct patient care):

 Extract from announcement yesterday:

“Under the system entire GP records will not be collected. All the data which is collected is protected - or pseudonymised - before it leaves the GP surgery to ensure patients cannot be directly identified from the data while still enabling it to be safely linked to other records.

Data can only be accessed by organisations which will legitimately use the data for healthcare planning and research purposes, and they will only get the specific data that is required. All requests are subject to independent oversight and scrutiny, and audits are conducted to ensure it is being used for the purpose it was requested for.
