Cardiovascular disease - what is it?

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a general term that includes diseases that affect the heart and blood vessels. This includes stroke and conditions that affect the heart such as a heart attack.

What area the risk factors for cardiovascular disease?

High blood pressure and cholesterol

Diabetes

Obesity 

Smoking

CVD Prevention Programme

Many people do not know they are living with risk factors for CVD and a key objective of the Scottish Government's Cardiovascular Risk Factors Programme is for early intervention and care to reduce a patient's risk. 

Patients are eligible for health checks if they meet the following conditions:

Age 35-60 and have not had a full bundle of CVD checks in the last 3 years ( blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes check, smoking and alcohol status, height, weight and BMI recorded at the practice). 

The practice are inviting eligible patients to opt in by text / in person. When opted in, you will see the health care support worker for some health checks and blood test. A GP will see you for an appointment to go through the results.
