Do you help look after someone? If so, you might be an unpaid carer and could receive help and support to assist you in this role.
An unpaid carer is someone who looks after a relative, friend or neighbour who is ill, frail, disabled, has a mental health concern, or is affected by substance misuse and who could not manage without that help.
You may help someone with:
Administering medicine
Practical support
Physical help
Financial matters
Emotional support
Personal care
All whilst trying to have a life of your own…
Does this sound like you? If so, you are an unpaid carer, this means you do not earn a wage for your caring role (however you may be in receipt of benefits).
We feel that caring for someone is an important and valuable role in the community. It can often be a 24-hour role that can be extremely demanding and isolating for the individual offering care and support, be this physical and/or emotional. We further believe unpaid carers should receive support by way of access to accurate information on a range of topics such as entitlement to benefits and short breaks and not least, a listening ear.

What is a Carer’s Needs Assessment?
A Carers assessment is an opportunity to discuss with Social Services about your personal responsibilities as a Carer in having the help and support where needed. Every Carer is entitled to a free assessment; however, it is not an assessment of your ability to provide care, but to see what help and support you may need. Once registered as a Carer with your GP surgery, the Practice will offer you the chance of a referral to Social Services, to discuss the help and support that you and the person you care for might need.
At the Practice we aim to raise the awareness of the needs of Carers and to support them with practical help and information on local and national support and help. We know that Carers often have limited time to look after their own health needs, so we encourage Carers to make an appointment with the Practice Nurse for a Health Check. If we are able to recognise you as a Carer, we can ensure that you receive the appropriate consideration and support where needed.
