Are you a carer looking for support?
VolunteerNet is a free service for adults who have caring responsibilities. If you and the person you care for are 18 or over and live together in Edinburgh you can apply to join the service.
Carers can organise support from fully PVG checked, trained and supervised volunteers online, allowing you to stay in full control of the support you receive. You can access the support 7 days at week between 7am-10pm, and you choose what support you need and the volunteer by whom you will be supported. The type of support available includes things like:
  • practical help with daily tasks such as gardening or shopping
  • spending time with the cared for person giving you, the carer, a couple of hours of respite (for example at home or going out for a walk, to the cinema, exercise class)
  • help with activities requiring extra pair of hands such as when going somewhere by bus, attending appointments or shopping.
See the VolunteerNet website for more information about the service. To register call Social Care Direct on 0131 200 2336.
  • Caring for a parent

  • Telling people

Caring responsibilities can make it difficult to maintain friendships or develop new ones. Telling your friends you're a carer is important so they understand and can support you.

  • Taking a break

Caring for someone can be a full-time job, but it's essential that you take time out for yourself too. Read our guide to accessing breaks and respite.

  • Housing and carers

Do you know your tenancy rights as a carer? Are you aware of all your care at home options? Do you need tips on moving someone around the home?
