A carer can be anyone, of any age, who provides unpaid care and support to a relative, friend or neighbour who is disabled, physically or mentally ill, or affected by substance misuse.
Unpaid carers are the single largest provider of care in our communities, and they save the NHS and social services millions of pounds a year.
When the Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act 2014 came into force on 6 April 2016, it brought with it important new rights for carers in Wales.
Support to carers is provided by many different agencies including health and social services, third sector organisations, education and training providers, and employers.
