Mental Health and School Attendance

Did you know that poor mental health has been linked to poor school attendance? Anxiety is often described as a key risk factor.

School plays a key role in a child’s development, and frequent absence from school increases the likelihood of a range of adverse outcomes in childhood and later life.

If you think your child is missing school due to their poor mental health or for any other reason then it's important to let their school know. Schools and colleges can work with your child to set attendance and achievement goals, and also develop a realistic plan for improving attendance. They can also help your child to access mental health support services if they need it.

Research has shown a clear link between being absent from school and academic success so make sure you reach out to your child’s school if you have any concerns.
