If you are able to recognise signs and symptoms of minor illnesses, you will probably be able to help yourself get better without calling for outside help. However, self-help does not mean dealing with health problems on your own. The practice team are here to help with any problems or situations you cannot cope with.

Pharmacist & Pharmacy First

Your local pharmacy is a convenient place to obtain advice on treating minor illness. You can just pop in; many are open weekends and have long opening hours. They can help you to stock your home medicine chest and advise on home remedies. 

NHS 111

You should use this service when you urgently need medical advice and help in a non life-threatening situation or you are unsure what to do. NHS 111 is available 24hrs a day, 365 days a year.

Stockport Minor Eye Conditions Service (MECS)

This is a free service from opticians who are accredited to provide MECS service in Stockport. If you are registered with a Stockport GP you can use this service. Please telephone the practice for advice and the Receptionist will direct you to your nearest participating optician. Minor eye conditions that can be treated by the service include:

• Red eye or eyelids

• Dry eye gritty and uncomfortable eyes

• Irritation and inflammation of the eye

• Significant recent sticky discharge from the eye or watery eye

• Recently occuring flashes and floaters

• Painful eye

• Ingrowing eyelashes

• Recent and sudden loss of vision

• Foreign body in eye
  
  

Please Note: this service is not for major eye conditions such as cataracts, diabetic retinopathy or glaucoma.

Treatment Room

Treatment rooms are situated within 10 clincs/health centres across Stockport and provides treatment and advice on the following:

• Wound care - assessment, treatment, provision of dressings and referral to other services if needed.

• Removal of stitches or clips

• Management of urinary catheters

• Ear care - Stockport does not offer routine ear irrigation for the removal of ear wax. If ear wax is causing you to have hearing loss you should use ear drops to soften the wax for 3 weeks. If your hearing is still affected after 3 weeks of using drops you may need to have your ears irrigated. The nurse will make an assessment and advise on the best course of action.
