Patient Online is an NHS England programme designed to support GP practices to offer and promote online services to patients, including access to coded information in records, appointment booking and ordering of repeat prescriptions.

Patient Online - information about GP online services

Patient Access is the name of the software module offered by GP surgeries (such as The Riverside Partnership) running the EMIS GP records system.

Patient Access enables you to do the following online (or via a smartphone app):

  • Book appointment
  • Order repeat prescriptions
  • Update your contact details (address, phone numbers etc)
  • Access your full electronic GP record securely online

This facility is free, both to the surgery and to patients.

You can logon and use Patient Access on a computer, tablet or via a smartphone app, freely downloadable for Android (Google Play) and iOS (iTunes).

You can potentially have access to your full electronic GP record including consultations, medication, allergies, vaccinations, GP and hospital letters, blood test results and x-ray/scan reports.

You are also able to check the results of any blood tests or x-rays requested by your GP, download them, print them off at home, take them to hospital appointments etc.

You are then able to show your GP record, if you wish, to any healthcare professional that you might see, anywhere in the world (e.g. in a GP out-of-hours centre, A&E department or hospital), directly, or by permitting secure temporary access, or by exporting your record to a secure mobile device.

Whether you have these facilities enabled or not will not affect your care from the surgery – it is simply an additional benefit that is on offer.

The system for accessing your electronic medical record is via Patient Access.  If you are a patient who has already registered with Patient Access for online repeat prescriptions and/or appointment booking, and you wish to access the enhanced information, please call in to the surgery with your photo ID and our reception team will activate this facility.  We appreciate that you may have already provided this information, however it is part of the governance process to protect access to your data, and we need to ensure that we have noted on your records that we have seen your photo ID.

We would respectfully remind our patients that once electronic access to your medical records has been activated the responsibility for keeping log in details secure rests entirely with the patient.

If you have not yet registered for Patient Access please complete the following  On Line Access Request Form

Parental/Carer Access to Children’s Medical Records

Any parents/carers wishing to register for Patient Access on their children’s behalf may do so up to the month of their child’s 13th birthday.  If you are not the parent you will need to provide evidence of the legal responsibility entitling you to this information.

In the month of your child’s 13th birthday, the online access will be de-activated.  On reaching their 16th birthday the patient can present at the surgery and register themselves for patient access, following the process outlined above.

We have taken this step to protect the confidentiality of our young patients, in line with national guidelines.

If a child is not yet 16 but would like to register for access they should make an appointment with their GP, who will assess their competency to access this information.

Guidance for Patient Access

Before using EMIS Patient Access please read the following guidance.

Your Responsibility

The practice will take every measure to ensure that your EMIS Patient Access application is secure.  It is for this reason that full registration for this service cannot be completed without you presenting at the surgery with your photo id.  It is your responsibility to ensure that your EMIS Patient Access account remains secure.

You are able to cancel or reset your EMIS Patient Access Account at any time by contacting the surgery in writing.  You may wish to do this if you think someone else knows your log in details, or if you have shared these details with a family member or partner and no longer wish them to know these details.

Prescription Requests

EMIS Patient Access gives you the facility to send repeat medication requests to the surgery.  We require two working days to process requests.  When requesting your repeat medications please only select the items that you require.  Please note that if your medication use is too high, or if you request medication that is not due, your request may not be processed.  You need to check the status of your request by logging on to EMIS Patient Access.

Appointments

Booking an Appointment

In order that we can ensure that it is appropriate for you to see your GP rather than a nurse, please enter a reason for your appointment.  Sometimes it is better for you to see a nurse rather than your GP and due to the nature of nurse appointments these are not available to book online.

Cancelling Appointments

Please let us know if you are unable to attend an appointment that you have booked online.  You can contact us by telephone to cancel it, or you can cancel it by logging on to EMIS Patient Access.   You can also use this service to cancel your appointment.  Letting us know that you don’t need your appointment allows us to offer the appointment to someone else.

Inappropriate Use of EMIS Patient Access

We monitor the use of this service and we are sure that you will find it useful.  Please note however that if we find abuse of this service, we will revoke your access. You will have to discuss any services you require with our reception team.
