We have been advised recently by Public Health England that the UK is expecting a Flu epidemic in December 2017. This follows monitoring of the situation in the Southern Hemisphere and an increased number of patients suffering complications with the current flu strain. We have plenty of Flu Vaccinations available and a number of sessions available for patients at different sites and times.
Please contact the practice if you would like to take up the offer of a vaccination. These are free for anyone over 65 or in any of the clinical at risk groups such as Asthma, COPD, Diabetes heart, liver or kidney problems, if your immunity is low or if you are the main carer for someone or you are pregnant – then you NEED a flu jab.
Please also remember that we are now able to offer vaccination to anyone who works as a paid carer for an agency, nursing or residential homes.
Walking for Health
Keith Harrison is our Community and Wellbeing Officer for North Dorset in conjunction with our patient group is setting up free weekly accessible health walks. The first one will start at Sturminster Newton on 8th January 2018 at 2pm. This will be led by trained volunteer Walk Leaders.
The target group is anyone who is currently not active enough or who needs the motivation of a supportive group to get them moving more regularly. Our clinical staff might recommend the health walks to patients with a medical need to increase their levels of regular activity.
We hope in the future to set up walks from all four of our sites.
If you would be interested in attending the first one, please do give Keith a ring to book a place on 07825 691508 or click on the link here for even more details. Walking for Health

Childhood vaccinations cover the range of vaccinations delivered from at around 8 weeks old up to when a child first goes to school at 5 years old.
There are three good reasons to have your child vaccinated:
- vaccinations are quick, safe and extremely effective
- once your child has been vaccinated against a disease, their body can fight it off better
- if a child isn’t vaccinated, they’re at higher risk of catching – and becoming very ill from – the illness

Enhanced Data Sharing Model (EDSM)
Patients registered with a GP in The Blackmore Vale Partnership are set to benefit from a new way of sharing information about their care between NHS health professionals.
Going live on 8th August 2016, the Enhanced Data Sharing Model (EDSM) allows health professionals who are directly involved in an individuals’ care to view specific information contained within their GP health record; e.g. District Nurse, another GP, Physiotherapist. This is done with the individual’s consent. The individual has the right to refuse/withdraw consent at any time.
Examples of who might be able to access information include:
Accident and emergency services;
Walk in centres;
Minor injury units;
District nursing teams.
The EDSM system offers real benefits for local people. For example if you are receiving treatment from three different services, they can now share information and make decisions based on what other treatment you are already receiving. In the past they would have treated a patient but would not have had access to their full medical record.
Weymouth, Portland & Purbeck localities have already successfully implemented the Enhanced Data Sharing Model. Practices across Dorset have been working closely for some time to be able to achieve this too and we are delighted that we can now offer local people improved care both within the locality and across the rest of the country.
Information shared can only be accessed by health care professionals, other than your GP, when required and only with the patient’s permission. Patients who do not wish to share their information are advised to speak with their local GP Practice. If you have already opted out of sharing your record, this will still be case.
All information is held on a national secure electronic computer system called SystmOne which is currently home to around 37 million patient records. Access to these records is audited and can only be done with agreement from the person concerned.
