Loxwood Village Fete and Dog Show
On Saturday 10th June 2017 staff from Loxwood Medical Practice participated in the Loxwood Village Fete and Dog show. Initially we were invited to attend as First Aiders in case of any medical emergency, however we decided that this was an excellent opportunity to share some more information regarding a healthy lifestyle and improve the wellbeing of the local community. As ‘Your partner for a healthier future’ our doctors and nurses provided information about healthy eating, diet and exercise. There were examples of how much fat weighs and what it would look like and what happens if you continue to consume more calories than your body needs. Our Nurses were also on hand to discuss overseas travel and sun safety for those villagers lucky to be going on holiday soon.
Lots of juicy apples were handed out free to the local people and there was the chance to win one of two colourful baskets of fresh fruit and vegetables.
The sun continued to shine for the whole afternoon, there were no medical emergencies and the Fete pulled the whole community together.
Health and Wellbeing Fayre
On Friday 16th September 2016, undeterred by heavy rain, Loxwood Medical Practice opened its doors at 3.00pm for its very first Health and Wellbeing Fayre.
This unique event was the forward-thinking idea of the practice staff in an effort to start changing the way Primary Care can deliver healthcare to its entire community.
‘Your partner for a healthier future’ is the mission statement that all staff at the surgery strive to uphold. A spokesperson said, ‘we would like our patients to play an active role in looking after their own health so education is important to us as a medical practice.’
The afternoon’s events brought together Healthcare professionals from the private sector as well as local NHS services. Other community volunteer groups and local charities also participated during the Fayre to help demonstrate the importance of a healthy lifestyle on both the body and mind.
The Fayre also gave staff and exhibitors the opportunity to meet and share ideas with other healthcare professionals with the aim of improving long term health.
Fortunately, well timed early evening sunshine flooded the outside areas, creating a busy carnival atmosphere with a packed schedule of activities. These included a Zumba class, exercise bikes and equipment from the local leisure centre, gardening activities and raising awareness for Happy Landings part of Riding for the Disabled Association.
The practice remained open to patients who needed to see a doctor or nurse during the afternoon, but made good use of every available consulting room and the waiting room space for a variety of different advisors including physiotherapy, mindfulness workshops, wellbeing counsellors, podiatry, youth emotional support
counsellors, Carers Support West Sussex and Age UK. CPR demonstrations were given by one of the GPs and visitors were encouraged to take part and use the training manikin dolls that had been kindly donated to the surgery by Billingshurst Lions Club.
The nursing team offered advice on travel and immunisations, stopping smoking, alcohol unit awareness, salt and sugar content of food alongside Nutritionist Julie Fleming.
A successful ‘healthy’ bake sale was kept very busy all afternoon with donations going to support the Macmillan Cancer Care Nurses.
The whole event was well orchestrated with help from the Billingshurst Lions, who supervised parking in the village and provided a healthy lifestyle second hand book stall. The Lions also took the opportunity to promote their ‘Message in a bottle’ service.
The practice would like to hold a Health and Wellbeing Fayre annually and hopes that the next one will be even bigger and better!
